Composer Coffee Break 2

In a response to the current Covid-19 situation, and to help support our composer community, I’m hosting a weekly Zoom chat on Mondays at 3pm GMT for us to get together and talk through some of the issues facing us. as a community.

15:07:19 From Octavia Romano : I’ll be happy to help however I can
15:08:05 From Simon Franglen To All Panelists : Simon Franglen here for biscuits
15:08:45 From Tom Kilworth : Anna, yes for sure. My wife had the brilliant idea of advertising video call lessons to those who just lost their school instrumental teacher
15:10:01 From Billy Palmer To All Panelists : Right, will be signing up as a mentee! Amazing timing and thanks for doing this 🙂
15:10:38 From Mathias Bjørnskov : Sounds great!
15:10:51 From Anna Neale : Fantastic Tom. We are using online at the two universities I lecture at in production, key skills in Pro Tools and Logic. Captive audience…
15:11:21 From Kevin Sargent To All Panelists : Hi everyone! delighted to be here
15:11:40 From Anna Neale : Also been doing online writing sessions via Zoom/Whatsapp, creating content. Live streaming gigs (dusting off my guitar…).
15:12:15 From Michael Price : https://bit.ly/3bcESzK
15:12:18 From James McWilliam : Sounds like a great idea!
15:12:22 From Rob Knight : That sounds totally amazing
15:12:41 From Tom Rackham : Yeah, that sounds brilliant.
15:12:52 From Mitch Gardner : Fantastic.
15:12:54 From Michael Price : https://www.composerwellbeing.co.uk
15:12:54 From Liz Lane To All Panelists : Our university has just gone completely online – very happy to chat with anyone if helpful….
15:13:22 From Matthew Jones : That is fantastic. You’re all brilliant
15:13:54 From Richard Wilkinson To All Panelists : Oh, I think this is what Alec Roberts was talking about when I met up with him a couple of weeks back. Fantastic idea
15:14:36 From Alex Kozobolis To All Panelists : this is an incredible idea !
15:14:46 From john rushton To All Panelists : This sounds great
15:15:07 From Sam Hulick : 👏
15:15:15 From Jonny Colgan : This sounds awesome Harriet. Many thanks for setting this up 🙂
15:15:19 From Paul Farrer To All Panelists : hello all. I’m a noob. hope you are all well.
15:15:30 From Mathias Bjørnskov : Really looking forward to this. Great initiative.
15:15:44 From DIE HEXEN To All Panelists : Fantastic idea re mentoring/mente Harriet! Just got followed by Composer Wellbeing on Instagram.
15:15:55 From Liz Lane To All Panelists : Great initiative – thank you
15:16:34 From Sam Watts To All Panelists : Peter is an awesome remote cellist! As well as an awesome person. I’ve used him loads.
15:16:40 From Dominique Charpentier To All Panelists : Hello Peter!
15:17:35 From Tom Sweet To All Panelists : What was the first section from Harriet that I missed?
15:20:00 From Richard Wilkinson : Ah yes – that was mine 🙂
15:20:15 From Sam Watts : Peter is an awesome remote cellist! As well as an awesome person. I’ve used him loads.
15:23:16 From Anna Neale : Good headphone shout!
15:23:45 From Alessandro Mastroianni To All Panelists : That was an AMAZING impression of a click
15:24:10 From Simon Rushby : The headphones Peter mentioned: https://europe.beyerdynamic.com/dt-100.html
15:24:36 From Matthew Jones : If you can’t afford new headphones right now, you can raise the pitch of the click by a couple of octaves. The higher register is still audible to the musician, but less powerful
15:25:56 From Frans Bak : minimize the problems – the cello demo is just for reference – to make sure – just for safe – not needed?
15:26:53 From Tom Kinsella : Silly assistants
15:28:18 From Frans Bak : OMG – read peoples programming – new to me – good to know
15:29:54 From Frans Bak : 74 cues – read from programming?
15:30:41 From Callum Hoskin To All Panelists : would you not listen to a little bit of the demo for one of the cues to check you are on the right lines?
15:31:39 From Jim Sanger To All Panelists : Great advice from Peter on remote sessions, something I’ve been looking into doing
15:31:46 From Sam Watts : Peter always blows me away with his interpretations – as do all musicians I’ve used. They add so much to a piece.
15:32:01 From Mirela Nita To All Panelists : Hello Nainitaaaa!!! <3
15:32:11 From Anna Neale : YES!
15:32:18 From Anna Neale : Online jamming
15:32:41 From Peter Gregson To Callum Hoskin and All Panelists : well, it’s tricky because you don’t listen to the demo on ‘proper’ sessions so it really is best to be able to play it off the page
15:32:48 From Richard Wilkinson : I saw Jacob Collier jamming in realtime on a video call with a singer – but then again, he is some sort of alien
15:32:49 From James McWilliam : Source Connect?
15:33:01 From Mathias Bjørnskov : I’ve used SourceLive for a task like that, I recorded with an orchestra in real time with it
15:33:11 From Callum Hoskin : get really really long cables!
15:33:20 From Elaine Christine Gallant To All Panelists : Hello Nainita, thanks for the invite.
15:33:24 From Richard Wilkinson : Source connect is good quality – but is it realtime? I thought there was lag
15:33:46 From Oli Julian To All Panelists : we’re about to test a combo of the audiomovers plug in and zoom
15:33:47 From Mathias Bjørnskov : Source Live is pretty much real-time, but of course, there’ll always be some delay
15:34:23 From Rob Knight : ISDN come back :-p
15:34:33 From Rob Connor To All Panelists : https://youtu.be/OmJUOkf0kE4
15:34:52 From Robert Thomas : this was an interesting project : https://www.cockos.com/ninjam/
15:34:54 From John McFarlane To All Panelists : we almost need a new rate sheet for remote recording given the reduction in porterage, travel etc and the increase in hats to be worn as player, engineer etc
15:35:12 From Oli Julian To All Panelists : using zoom you can operate someone’s DAW I think so you might be able to engineer someone’s session remotely? haven’t tried it yet
15:35:27 From Rob Connor To All Panelists : the above YouTube video is for https://now.source-elements.com
15:35:28 From Oli Julian To All Panelists : via screen share etc….
15:35:44 From Tara Creme : Is that a Heals mistral?
15:36:20 From Rob Connor : https://youtu.be/OmJUOkf0kE4
15:36:58 From Rob Connor : The YouTube link above for https://now.source-elements.com
15:37:51 From Richard Wilkinson : Funnily enough, a video game I’m working on is sourcing animators from the film world who are now out of work. Very strange time but video games are *slightly* safer than some other projects I think
15:38:18 From Sam Watts : That’s so awesome, Rich!
15:38:34 From Richard Wilkinson : Another game has been canned altogether, so it’s still precarious of course
15:39:09 From Anna Neale : Yes, all my radio work is on hold. Compositional and VO.
15:39:26 From Anna Neale : Working on collaboration and exploring new compositional and musical avenues.
15:39:46 From James McWilliam : We just have to isolate with others now …!
15:40:13 From Giles Thornton To All Panelists : everything I had work wise, has either been cancelled, and stuff that isn’t cancelled, will probably be cancelled soon!
15:41:21 From Sam Watts : Yep, the TV show I was due to start has been put “on hold”. No idea If it’s been cancelled all together or just delayed.
15:41:42 From Sam Hulick : has anyone seen slowdowns in video game work?
15:41:53 From Jonny Colgan : I’ve yet to see the extent of the fallout in the advertising world but have lost one project so far
15:41:56 From Sam Hulick : I would imagine games will keep trudging along
15:42:24 From Matthew Jones : I suppose it depends on if the game designers have powerful enough home systems in comparison to the ones they use at work?
15:42:30 From Matthew Jones : designers/developers
15:42:41 From Christian Biegai To All Panelists : Are there any government help funds for self employed people in Britain?
15:42:42 From Lars Einar Johansen : Everyone I’ve talked to seems like their video game projects are moving along more or less as planned
15:42:48 From Richard Wilkinson : That’s part of it – or being able to ship/take their kit home.
15:42:58 From Richard Wilkinson : Especially on VR it’s a bit trickier
15:42:58 From Tom Kilworth : I would have hoped the video game industry would do well in this environment. My non-music industry friends are playing video games a lot more now that they have to work from home!
15:43:26 From Richard Wilkinson : Yes – we’re all making the stuff people are relying on to keep sane in lockdown!
15:43:38 From Sam Hulick : yeah, I figured video games would mostly be unaffected as they can work remote on some level
15:44:08 From Matthew Jones : Very true Richard and Sam. Shipping/Remote networking could be the way for them
15:44:09 From Lars Einar Johansen : The biggest issue I’ve heard some big studios have problems with is that the end of the pipeline are unable to come in to their studio spaces.
15:44:42 From Christian Biegai To All Panelists : The royalty association in Germany (GEMA) is helping composers during this time. Any word from the PRS?
15:45:17 From Elaine Christine Gallant To All Panelists : Streaming plateforms are soaring! Broadcasters are going to whip up new documentaries to replace the filming of live content such as sports.
15:45:30 From Christian Biegai : The royalty association in Germany (GEMA) is helping composers during this time. Any word from the PRS?
15:45:55 From Matthew Jones : Very true Lars. I had some recording to do but live in an old noisy house. Difficult to get anything none sample based written. Anyone else having similar issues?
15:46:20 From Sam Watts : PRS are planning on continuing payments as per usual (this may have to change) and if you’re in real hardship, you can try the PRS Foundation.
15:46:25 From Richard Wilkinson : Nothing specific, but someone shared this on Scorecast – useful compilation from the Ivors Academy: https://ivorsacademy.com/coronavirus/coronavirus-advice-for-musicians/
15:46:40 From Sam Watts : I was about to post that link, Rich. Thanks!
15:47:17 From Anna Neale : Help Musicians too
15:47:20 From Lars Einar Johansen : Everything that is reliant on audio hardware is at a halt where they have their spaces in the main studio. This includes sound designers who might have their modular synth rigs built into their pod studios, the main mastering stage, etc.
15:47:33 From Peter Flint : I’m in the same boat Matt! I’m stuck in a really noisy house, so I got some contact mics in and I’m experimenting with them!
15:47:39 From Anna Neale : Ivors are trying to lobby government to get them to recognise self employed composers/songwriters
15:47:58 From Christian Biegai : Excellent!
15:48:09 From Sam Watts : Yes, Anna. The Ivors Academy are doing some amazing work.
15:48:21 From Richard Wilkinson : I saw Nainita is doing something for Quibi which sounds like another fascinating new platform
15:48:50 From Richard Wilkinson : <10 minute shows
15:48:51 From Roger Hooper To All Panelists : Matthew Jones, I live in a townhouse, with a noisy heat pump (furnace unit outside the window). I set up a couple of solid core doors with acoustic foam on them (in a V), and was able to get a pretty good recording.
15:48:54 From Anna Neale : http://www.coronamusicians.info
15:49:11 From Matthew Jones : Peter, that idea sounds brilliant! Can even get down to sampling the house itself. Hope it works out well!
15:49:32 From Anna Neale : Any other Ivors committee members on here? I may have missed some of the other initiatives.
15:49:52 From Anna Neale : Musicians Union are also creating a hardship fund
15:49:58 From Kevin Sargent : Yes I’m here!
15:50:06 From Rob Knight : PRS has hardship fund too
15:50:11 From Christian Biegai : If you have played on any TV or radio show or a record in Germany, you can apply for some funding here. https://www.gvl.de/en
15:50:34 From Matthew Jones : I’m with Ivors, I saw that post earlier on and have had an email through. Apart from that not much. Limited funds but they and PRS will do their best
15:50:46 From Anna Neale : https://www.musiciansunion.org.uk/HardshipFund
15:50:49 From Christian Biegai : Sorry…if you the show, record, has been broadcast in Germany you are eligible for some support.
15:50:59 From Anna Neale : Hi Kevin!
15:51:16 From Kevin Sargent To All Panelists : Hi Anna
15:52:15 From DIE HEXEN To All Panelists : Hey Richard Wilkinson. I would like some advice re Games Compositon. What’s the best way to contact you? Many thanks!
15:52:36 From Elaine Christine Gallant To All Panelists : Hahaha, that’s me on screen!
15:52:38 From Sam Watts : Harriet’s right. I’m spending the time editing a video showreel and revamping my website. It’s a good use of the time. Definitely.
15:52:41 From Jonny Colgan : No pressure Peter
15:52:43 From Kevin Kerrigan To All Panelists : Thanks Micheal and co! good to see you everyone. stay safe! X
15:52:47 From Tom Gray : Tom Gray here. Writer-Director for PRS. So you know, we are working quickly (not as quick as GEMA clearly) to make an announcement for UK writers and composers.
15:52:59 From Christian Biegai : Thumbs up!
15:53:05 From Matthew Jones : Thanks Tom
15:53:08 From john rushton : Thanks Tom
15:53:25 From john rushton : very cool
15:53:30 From Anna Neale : Tom’s a good one!
15:53:30 From Joby Burgess To All Panelists : Ace!
